University fees have risen faster than wages in most countries over the past two decades, and many families now treat a degree as a debt rather than a chance9 . In my view, funding tuition from taxation is the better option1 , because the price of a degree decides who studies long before ability does.
Firstly, tuition fees discourages 11 students from poorer households, even when they are qualified. A lot of 7 research from the United Kingdom shows that applications from the lowest income group fall whenever fees rise, and those students carry the largest debts afterwards. In practice, the students who need a degree most are the ones asked to gamble on it.
